My Plan For Not Letting My Goals Overwhelm Me

My 2022 Goal Setting approach

Here we are already halfway through the first week of 2022. The holidays are over and everyone is moving on excited to tackle their new goals. Most go about setting personal and professional goals for the year and some set new years resolutions.

In December, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about what I want to accomplish both professionally and personally in 2022. In 2021, I refocused and rebranded my business to focus on the things I truly love to help people with. I’m finally feeling aligned in what my purpose is and can’t wait to make things happen.

Sometimes we get bogged down in setting all kinds of goals for the year. It quickly can become overwhelming. We can lose sight of what we’re trying to accomplish and give up quickly because we’ve tried to focus on too many things. Things also evolve throughout the year. Setting goals too far into the future doesn’t work for me.

So I’ve decided to approach my goals cautiously this year. I remember when I was in corporate we’d take time to set all kinds of goals for the year and I always wondered how they tied into the bigger picture because rather than pinpoint what was really achievable we were always required to come up with a certain number of goals that fit within a certain framework. And by June, I’d have to dig around to find my performance appraisal to remember what my goals ever were.

My focus this year is to not bog myself down with a lot of lofty goals that I’m projecting out into the future. Instead, I’ve set a couple of long-term goals for the year. And for each of those goals, I’ve developed action steps I can take each week, month, and/or quarter that will move me closer and closer to those larger goals. By doing it this way, it gives me immediate steps to focus on rather than looking at some large goal that is due at the end of the year and wondering how to get there. I’ll be working on my long-term goals all year with defined action steps broken out into shorter time frames. Each quarter, I’ll review what I’ve worked on and make any revisions necessary.

My personal goals are simpler this year. I’m planning to continue eating right and exercising. In 2021, I added strength training to my routine. I’d like to increase that by one day per week. I’m also going to continue focusing on strengthening relationships. And I’m going to get out and try some new things this year like longer hikes, night hikes and taking my dog to training and nose art classes. I’m also going to learn how to add meditation to my self-care routine.

WORD OF THE YEAR

I’ve also chosen a word for the year. Thinking about the things that I struggled with in 2021 led me to choose the word Peace for 2022. I’m looking at peace as the opposite of fear. I’ll be at peace promoting my services because I know that I can help entrepreneurs feel less intimidated by their money. I’ll be at peace when I make decisions in my business and not second guess myself. And I’ll be at peace letting others know what I’m doing and who I help.

I’ll also be at peace in my personal life. I’ll keep healthy boundaries to make sure I’m doing things that honor me. I’ll spend time getting to know those who have a positive outlook. I’ll spend more time doing things I enjoy and more time in nature.

Peace is part of the journey. Not a destination. By practicing bringing inner peace to my life, relationships, and business, I can hopefully promote more peace. Martin Luther King Jr said that “Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.” I’m going to try to remind myself that being at peace in and outside myself is part of my journey. It isn’t something that is off in the distant future but something that I can practice each day.

Those are the things that have been on my mind the past month. How about you? Are you a goal setter? What’s your approach? Do you do resolutions? Select a word for the year? I’d love to hear how you’re tackling the new year. Leave me a comment and let me know!
